Copper vs PEX: Which Plumbing Material is Best for your Home?
-
Copper
Pros:
Durability: Copper has a life expectancy of 50-70 years.
High Temperature Resistance
Copper naturally inhibits the growth of bacteria, making more sanitary for drinking water.
Cons:
Cost: Material cost is more expensive than PEX.
Corrosion will happen in water conditions with high acidity.
Rigidity: Copper is very rigid, possibly making installation difficult in areas where pipes may need to bend or weave.
-
PEX
Pros:
Cost-Effective: PEX is much cheaper in comparison to copper.
Corrosion-Resistant: Unlike copper, PEX is not susceptible to corrosion, even in highly acidic water.
Color Coding: PEX can often be color-coded (red for hot, blue for cold), making it easier to distinguish during installation or repairs.
Cons:
UV Sensitivity: PEX cannot be exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods.
Temperature Limits: PEX can handle most household hot water needs, but it is not recommend for very high temperature applications.
Less Historical Data: Since PEX is newer material, it does not have the same long-term durability track record as copper.
